What is eSIM? Comparison between eSIM and traditional SIM card.

What is eSIM?

eSIM (Embedded SIM card) is a new type of SIM card technology. Similar to physical SIM cards, we can also obtain network transmission services through virtual eSIM. The chip in our mobile phones itself has storage and encryption capabilities. Through this chip, we can add data from multiple telecom operators simultaneously via the internet or specific applications. Just like physical SIM cards, eSIM allows us to make calls or use the internet. However, there is no longer a need to wait for the physical SIM card to be delivered or installed, saving time and hassle.

Comparison between eSIM and traditional SIM card

Traditional SIM card:

  • Physical card: The traditional SIM card is a small and thin plastic card that must be inserted into the SIM card slot of a device for the device to connect to the network.
  • Requires card insertion: When changing telecom operators or switching devices, the SIM card needs to be removed or inserted, which is a cumbersome process and may require additional tools to open the slot.
  • Risk of card loss: Since physical cards are easy to lose or damage, users need to take special care to keep them safe.
  • Supports global telecom operators: SIM cards can be replaced as needed to use different telecom operator services in different countries, but a different card is needed for each country.
  • High transportation costs: Physical SIM cards need to be shipped to users, which involves multiple steps such as logistics, packaging, shipping, and delivery, increasing transportation and waiting costs.

eSIM:

  • Virtual card: eSIM is a virtual SIM card embedded within the device, eliminating the need for physical card insertion.
  • Convenience: There is no longer a need to physically insert or remove SIM cards; telecom operators can be changed or new plans added through software settings. This offers greater convenience as users can download and install new eSIMs anytime, anywhere, without needing to visit physical stores.
  • Security: eSIM cards typically offer enhanced security as they cannot be physically stolen or copied.
  • Support for multiple telecom operators: A single device can store multiple eSIM cards, allowing for easy switching between telecom operators in different regions or situations.
  • Space-saving: eSIM eliminates the need for a physical card slot, allowing devices to be more compact or leaving more space for other functionalities.

Advantages of eSIM:

  • No need for physical plastic cards, users don't have to worry about needing other tools to insert the card.
  • Easy switching of telecom operators while traveling in different countries, no need to visit physical stores.
  • Instant purchase online, no need to wait for shipping time.
  • Personal privacy information is less likely to be leaked through eSIM, providing better information security.
  • Multiple phone numbers can be used simultaneously on one device.
  • Clear management of remaining eSIM usage on the phone, no longer need to worry about additional international roaming costs or receiving expensive telecom bills afterwards.
  • Smartwatches can also use eSIMs! But be aware of battery consumption.
eSIM is the most convenient choice for your international travels. No need to change cards, just buy and use on the go. Give it a try on your next trip!
